Kainui Road Vineyard

Setting
Sub-tropical plants, native shrubs and vines – you’ll see every shade of green here. Helen and Alan Thompson have lived in the region for more than three decades, and been involved in the citrus and kiwifruit industries. They’re relative newcomers to winegrowing, but are enthusiastic about their new project. The cellar door is small with an equally cute deck, and overlooks the generously spaced grounds. A bigger building is in the works but for now this is a perfect place to sip and admire the view.

Things to know
The Thompsons are well underway on their bush regeneration plan, planting thousands of plants to create a nature walk.

Our picks
The succulent pinot gris is a winner on a hot day, while the tempranillo is fleshy and supple.

Plus
After a hugely successful concert in the grounds last year, another event is planned for January. Look out for more details on their website.
