Abbey Cellars

Setting
Designed in the style of a gothic abbey, the building rises above the vines in cathedral-like fashion. The monastic theme carries on throughout Jan and Warren Haworth’s cellar door, with its brick-and-wrought-iron gate, vaulted ceilings, altar-like tasting counter and glittering candelabras.

Things to know
Fully utilising the potential of the red-metal soils in the Bridge Pa Triangle district, the Haworths, with winemaker Amelia Riwai, craft wines from merlot, syrah, cabernet sauvignon, riesling, malbec, chardonnay, cabernet franc and even carménère, petit verdot and viognier. Enjoy a glass in the sunny picnic area next to the cellar door, where cheese platters are available.

Our picks
For rich chocolate and cherry notes, try the Temptation Malbec; the Cardinal Cabernet Sauvignon is smoky and savoury; while those with a sweet tooth will love the Gabriel Noble Chardonnay.

Plus
This winery has its own brew pub, Fat Monk, on site. Freshen your palate with a pilsner before you leave.
